Hades 2 – Selene Boons And Path Of Stars Guide

Hades 2 has several Olympians who are ready to aid you in battle. The Goddess of the Moon, however, has her own mechanics that are quite unlike what you’ve come to expect from her fellow deities. Here’s our guide on the best Selene boons in Hades 2.

Hades 2 Selene boons guide: The Path of Stars and the best hexes from Selene

Selene, the Goddess of the Moon, introduces a nifty concept when in comes to choosing her blessings. It’s almost akin to “Calls” from the first game.

Where to find Selene

While Artemis and Primordial Chaos encounters tend to be even more random, Selene is similar to the other Olympians. She has her own sigil (i.e. crescent moon), which appears on doorways/exits. You’ll know when the next chamber leads to her reward.

Look for the crescent moon sigil if you want Selene’s blessings.

Selene Keepsake: Moon Beam

Don’t forget to give Selene a Nectar gift. This nets you the Moon Beam accessory. When equipped you gain a +1 upgrade for your chosen hex via the Path of Stars. You can learn about the other items in our Keepsakes guide.

How to use Selene’s hexes

The big difference when it comes to Hades 2 Selene boons, compared to what you gain from other Olympians, is that the hex from Selene is more of a “super” ability. Here’s a quick summary:

  • The first time you pick up a Selene boon, you get to choose from three potential options. Every subsequent sigil from that run grants an upgrade for that ability via the Path of Stars (more on this later).
  • These hexes also have corresponding upgrade points the moment you choose them, as denoted by a symbol with the phases of the moon:
    • Crescent Moon – No points.
    • Half Moon – +1 point.
    • Full Moon – +2 points.
  • Hex abilities can only be activated once you’ve spent the required amount of magick during an encounter. This is also reset upon entering another room.
  • For example: Twilight Curse requires 140 magick, which means you have to keep using omega abilities until you’ve spent that amount. This is the only time Twilight Curse can be used in battle.
  • Needless to say, you need boons, builds, and Arcana Cards that help with mana regeneration.
You have to spend a lot of mana before you can activate a hex.

List of Selene boons and which ones are the best

Her are the hexes that you can obtain from Selene in Hades 2:

  • Phase Shift – Make everything else move 80% slower for five seconds; 150 magick.
  • Twilight Curse – Your hex launches a seeking projectile that inflicts morph on up to 10 susceptible foes (i.e. turn them into sheep); 140 magick.
  • Lunar Ray – Continuously fire a beam dealing up to 1,200 damage over three seconds; 120 magick.
  • Wolf Howl – Jump up and crash down an area to deal 200 damage; 80 magick.
  • Moon Water – Restore +25 HP; there are three charges, which are reset when you drink from a fountain; 70 magick.
  • Night Bloom – Raise a random foe that has already been slain during the current encounter, making them fight alongside you for 12 seconds; 100 magick.
  • Total Eclipse – Blast the target area for 1,000 damage after four seconds; 200 magick.
  • Dark Side – Transform into a being impervious to all damage and has new abilities (lasts five seconds); 90 magick.

Among these options, we feel that Moon Water and Night Bloom are the two best Selene boons in Hades 2. The former is great for healing and keeping Melinoe in tip-top condition. That’s a total of +75 HP in between healing fountains.

The latter, meanwhile, can revive a stronger opponent which, in turn, ends up taking out other hostiles. Sadly, it can be a bit iffy if it revives a weaker foe. We should also mention that your own attacks, as well as high-damage nukes from supporting NPCs that appear at random (i.e. Artemis and Icarus), deal damage to these minions.

Sometimes, the hex with the full moon (i.e. +2 upgrade points) is also the worst.

The Path of Stars: Is it worth upgrading your Selene hex

Each Selene hex you pick has its own upgrade tree called the Path of Stars. As cited earlier, when choosing an ability, you receive upgrade points depending on the moon symbol. You then earn more points as you progress further into your current run and interact with additional Selene sigils.

The common upgrades in the skill tree grant basic benefits, such as slightly increased damage or reduced magick requirement. Rare and epic variants, meanwhile, provide more notable buffs, such as making your zombified allies explode or creating another Moon Blast explosion.

Sadly, we feel that these upgrades aren’t worth your while, unless you’re really focusing on magick-based/hex-based runs. Moon Water remains a great option, though, if you can get additional upgrades early. However, if it takes you a while to find your next Selene sigil, you’re probably better off prioritizing blessings from other Olympians.

It can take a while before you get all the upgrades you need, and you'll also miss out on other potential rewards.
